Save Avalice in This Sonic-Inspired Adventure
Though Freedom Planet is not a Sonic game per se–in fact, it is the only game at SAGE not to include any Sonic franchise characters–it certainly borrows many elements of platforming and speed from the series.
A demo of the game, which stars furry creatures Lilac and Carol, is again ready for your play at this year’s expo. A trailer showcasing the latest build’s features was also released, and you can see that below.
A lot of attention is being paid to this game; in fact, Freedom Planet was featured this morning on Destructoid. To play it for yourself, go to SAGE, click on Games, and look for the Freedom Planet icon.

Of all the fan-games I’ve played, THIS is the best.
Looks like SATS has some competition. 😉
If it were up to me, Freedom Planet would win the show hands down. My favorite goes from Sonic Fusion to this.
This game caught my attention immediately. I was impressed with this the moment the video demo started, and this definitely is going to be the highlight of the show for me. Mainly because while it’s roots are clearly Sonic based, it’s something entirely new that reminded both me and my friends of the classic 16-bit heyday.
As cool as freedom planet is, I’m not so sure about it being #1, especially because the game doesn’t even have ANY Sonic characters.
It’d be kind of weird to have a “non”- Sonic game be #1 at this year’s SAGE… :/
The game feels more like Megaman with a couple of speed setpieces from Sonic like loops and ramps thrown in, not really a fan of mashing the attack button over just simple hoping and bopping. As a mashup of 90’s platformers it’s neat but don’t go into this thinking it’s a Sonic game.
@Ricardo
Well at least it has Sonic influences compared to lets say a Mario fangame winning it.
@SSJSonicXX14
Thing is, your not mashing the attack button over and over. In fact, you could choose to ignore the attack button if you wish, since most of the enemies can be passed without you hitting them. To me, Im not getting the megaman vibe, but more like a ristar, platformer kind of vibe. Its one of my favorite fangames of SAGE right now; actually it might be my favorite.
PS: That title theme is epic win.
Lilac and Carol are Sonic FAN characters, I recognize them from deviantart…so technically they ARE Sonic characters, but not officially or commercially.
I’m getting Astal and Vectorman vibes out of this too, along with the Sonic and Megaman X ones.
