More Lilac, Less Sonic
Amateur games and game development don’t stop after SAGE. Case in point: Fan produced original game Freedom Planet continues to see additions and improvements made after its strong showing at the expo, with feedback from players being considered along the way.
One of the concerns that has been aired and debated is whether the title character, Lilac, bears too much of a resemblance to Sonic in style and mechanics to differentiate itself from traditional SFGs. On a new gameplay video which you can see below, FP producer Strife addressed those concerns:
Whether good or bad, though, pretty much everyone has agreed that Lilac bears more than a passing resemblance to Sonic the Hedgehog in appearance. After taking a few steps back and giving myself time to think about what I really want for the game, I’ve decided that I myself was not entirely happy with her design either. So, I have decided to give her a makeover.
With that said, I’m happy to present the new Lilac! She still has similar proportions to a Sonic character, but I’ve taken the effort to better highlight how she’s different from him. I’ve ditched the hedgehog spikes and went with a look that’s a more original, attractive, and easier to draw. I’m also putting a greater emphasis on her hair tendrils, as you can see by her new rolling animation in which she wraps them around her body and uses them like a wheel (instead of transforming into a sphere like Sonic, as was the case previously).
We’ll continue to bring you details on this and other fan games featured throughout the community.
