Ending the Month on a Silly Note

Our month-long exploration of Sonic mods comes to an end this week, and I found it kind of appropriate to wrap up with some sillier creations. With that in mind, we’ve tracked down two mods of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that capture this silly spirit despite being a bit older in terms of fanmade content. The first is called Sonic 2 XL, and it was hacked by Captain Bozo and Ranger. Its page on Sonic Retro describes it as follows:

Sonic 2 XL takes after other hacks that penalize the player for collecting rings…the fatter Sonic is, the slower he runs and the shorter he jumps. With enough onion rings, Sonic is unable to roll properly, and if he gets too fat, he dies. Sonic can burn off the fat by running, or by hitting the “?” monitors strategically scattered through levels.

So, if you’ve begging to see Sonic get progressively fatter and slower for some reason, you now know where to look. The second mod is called Sonic 2 Dimps Edition and was created by SOTI, among others. If you recall, Sonic 4: Episode I was met with criticism due to some fans’ dissatisfaction with its physics and level design, and SOTI‘s mod is a direct parody of that criticism. As its name implies, the mod alters Sonic 2 to make it feel more like Sonic 4; some of the changes include the addition of the homing attack, chains of enemies, and a plethora of speed boosters.
