Most Want to Stay the Course
As was seen in Sonic #244, lawsuits can and do change the course of things, no matter how much an audience may think one side or the other is in the right, and no matter what the actual outcome of said suit is. It does appear that, temporarily at least, the Archie Sonic comics could be in for significant changes as Archie continues to hammer out a proper settlement with former writer Ken Penders, who was sued by the company over the validity of copyrights pertaining to the comics he filed.
With that in mind, the latest TSSZ @Issue poll asked if you think, in light of all this, the comics should get a reboot–a clean slate, if you will, to avoid further potential trouble. A total of 677 votes were cast, and a majority, 60 percent voted No. The remaining 40 percent voted Yes.
We will see what Ian Flynn and company do in the coming issues. In the meantime, a new poll is now available to vote on.

I don’t know… I mean, I like how they’re doing the comics as they are, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a comic line with only the in-game characters (although I do enjoy a lot of the comic characters).
Therefore, I’m currently unsure.
Would it really affect anything to reboot it? The whole comic series never gets anywhere closer to ending a conflict, it’s always too many new characters and plot twists that over extend the comics with nothing really getting resolved. It’s like the TV show for Pokemon. People who haven’t watched that show in years, but decide to look back on it would be very disappointed to see Ash hasn’t changed a bit (outside of appearance)
I’m not interested by a comics without satam, echidna or Nicole characters.
Business is what it is I guess… things happen, changes and drastic measures sometimes are called for.
Its true that its always been what has kept the AOSTH and SATAM spins alive… but regardless Sonic first (and always has been) a big game series. Back in the beginning it was simple: Dr. Eggman/Dr. Ivo Robotnik has captured all of Sonic’s animal friends and must free them! Running through loops and various routes, gathering the chaos emeralds and traveling locations as he confronts the mad scientist.
In the SATAM defense, the “Genesis” arc is an example that the elements CAN mix with some work.
As someone who stopped following the comic, I know that the continuities have much conflict. A lot more since this debate of the Penders vs Archie issue.
For some the echidnas being warped away for possibly time being was fine; Knuckles originally an orphan and last of his kind already.
Others, not so much.
But as SpongicX said… much like Pokemon it just continued to move on with no resolved plots, instead stacking them. Most of Archie’s moves are more like an attempt to create a clean slate and move from there thing to me…
Well the thing of it is, every comic book that lasts this long will feel like it has a lot of unresolved issues. It seems to be inescapable to most long running comics (DC and Marvel books tend to reset constantly leaving plots behind like its nothing). Unfortunately since the book has no definite end it will always try to avoid “the happy ending” because as a business model u want your product to last as long as possible. But as long the Sonic books continue to sell and promote new games the book will have a pretty long life if the court case doesn’t kill it.
Would Genesis count as a ‘reboot’?
Personally there’s no need for a new reboot, I like the characters the comic has introduced and its been going on a fine course so far.
@Trez
In Marvel’s case they don’t reset things to ignore plot lines and points the hack writers just forget or ignore them in order to tell their story. DC on the other hand has overt things like Superboy Prime punching a wall in order to alter whatever the writers and editors want, as silly as things like that are at least they are being honest with the reader.
@Tizoc
No it’s Ian specially giving the finger to anyone that’s tired of the current 20 year old continuity and his fetishization of it. Genesis has “this is what you want right? Well you’re not getting it” subtext written all through out it.

…what is this… I don’t even…
this awful convoluted and stationary comic that never solves any issue and conflict where everyone acts OCC and an asshole needs a desperate reboot.
@ Amuro
Read the comic book, and you will feel that way.
It actualy hurt me how terrible the twist was after genesis. I could barley talk I was so pissed off.
I really don’t think Archie has to do a reboot just because some minor characters (not saying that they have no merit) “might” have to be written out. It’s not Knuckles that is taking the hit so really the losses won’t be continuity-shattering.
Also I know some people think that Sonic the Hedgehog comics will never have a resolution and that’s pretty true. It’s just like any running comic book series, Batman will never permanently defeat the Joker, Sonic will never permanently defeat Eggman as long as the STH franchise stays alive. Which for me is fine, I enjoy the journey anyway.
@robot
Difference being is that most arches don’t even end.
They leave on a cliffhanger tha leaves for the next cliffhanger for the next cliffhanger for the next cliffhanger.
At least Batman takes time to set up the atmosphere of the world he lives in
In this comic apparently the action must NEVER stop
@ Ricardo Mendoza
But what you’re arguing is almost EVERY American comic books’ problem with unresolved plots, and story arcs ending in cliffhangers upon cliffhangers (hell some Manga do it too), its just to keep fans coming back for more and it’s a solid tactic for this market plus it works .And honestly Sonic just isn’t as bad as most who do it IMO . As for the non-stop action, well it’s a SONIC book, and the book does go through periods of downtime if you actually follow it but what can I say? Ian loves to write action-oriented stories (it’s what i’m looking foward to in the upcoming crossover)
As for your Batman opinion that is soley your opinion on the Batman books, I myself have been reading 2 of the batman titles since New 52 launched and to me the atmosphere has been all over the place IMO.
Trez, if you don’t mind my asking, which ‘dynamic duo’ of Batman books are you currently reading?
wow i thought archie stopped in 2003 i never knew
i wonder if i can still get a few comics
Off-topic to answer Paul-Agnew
I try to keep up on most “bat family” books but the ones I seem to buy and support religiously are the main batman title and Batman and Robin (loving this title lately) with the occasional Nightwing. When New 52 launched it changed Batman’s history slightly and also the history of the Robins mainly to attract new fans but how they went about what was changed and what was kept seemed a bit random.
Back to Sonic, i feel a reboot here would work if it followed the “Genesis” continuity and expanded on that. It had the games locales and whimsy (and classic eggman design which is always win ) while actually blending the old SatAm characters pretty well. And then if it wanted could ditch, keep, or add whatever old SegaSonic and ArchieSonic elements while adding new and original content when needed to keep things fresh like the current MegaMan book. But for now I think the sonic book is doing fine and hope it can continue for as long as its readers demand it.
I think that the lawsuit is the guise to SEGAize Archie for good.
@Ricardo Mendoza: I read the Genesis arc, that’s not what I was referring to. SSJSonic’s immature comment about how Flynn is apparently ‘fetishizing’ the comic was what got me baffled. Man, Sonic fans really know how to act mature, don’t they? What with their childish comments that sound like stuff said by a sixth grader.
@amuro
yet youre a fan yourself?
And aslo..yea…the hell does that mean..
@Ricardo: The thing is, I try not to act like a twat. Which is more than I can say for a lot of other people in this fanbase, including some comments I’ve seen from you.
Honestly I don’t want a reboot, and even more there’s only like five Echidnas I want to come back anyways (and also SAFFRON, oh hi, you sure did get taken away too). All I really want is the ability for Archie to REFERENCE THEM AND USE THEIR NAMES. Cause if you read Sonic 244 and the Sonic Universe 46-48, you will notice nobody says anyone’s names, just refers to them in roundabout ways. Julie-Su is called the pet-name “hon” by Knuckles (which is weird and sort of out of character). Lien-Da is called “Knuckle’s crazy great Aunt” or whatever. Rob and Mari-An are referred to as “The King and his wife”. And the Legionnaires are called “Eggman’s Army”. Like…can you be anymore obvious about it? It’s sort of annoying that they can’t even use people’s NAMES for the sake of writing and not being awkward.
I think when they say reboot it doesn’t mean anything like leaving out the current characters. Reboots generally happen with the current series coming to some sort of conclusion within the next few issues after the reboot has been announced and then going back to Issue #1. Which would more than likely still be the same Sonic series but just back to number one with a clean slate. Which I wouldn’t mind. Being a Sonic fan (more so recently) it’s hard to get into the current 240+ issues when they only have Archive up to Volume 20. Putting it back to Issue #1 would allow possibly a new generation of kids, teens and even the occasional adult to pick up the series and enjoy it again.
