Worlds–and More Variant Covers–Collide
Today, the comic book oriented website Comic Book Resources released the first preview for Sonic Universe #52, which lands square in the middle of the Mega Man and Sonic crossover arc dubbed Worlds Collide.
This issue marks part five of the 12 part series. It will be out in May. Sonic, Tails, Mega and Proto Man explore the Skull Egg Zone while the combined power of Eggman and Dr. Wily unleashes the next big attack. Ian Flynn penned the script, and there are three variant covers that will be available, with Patrick Spaziante having a hand in all of them. The main cover holds some references to Sonic Adventure in the typeface, so keep holding on to that faith, Adventure series fans.
Take a look at those three covers following Archie’s formal synopsis.

. . . Megaman actually looks better than Sonic here . . .*frowny face* :/
I’ve got a couple of things to say about the Sonic Universe cover in particular.
1. Megaman looks kinda weird in that Yuji Uekawa-esque style of illustration. …actually, I think it’s more the eyes that look a bit odd, iunno. It’s alright.
2. So Megaman’s fighting robotic copycats of Amy, Knuckles, and Shadow, meanwhile Sonic is fighting Robot Master-esque Badniks? Huh. Pretty cool.
3. I love the fact that they decided to use the font fact from Sonic Adventure 2 on this cover. ^^
All in all, not bad. Not bad at all.
I’ve always when comic book companies do variant covers, but at least Archie lets us have a choice (rather than make certain variants more “rare” so comic book stores can charge a ridiculous premium for a $3-4 comic book). The SA2-spoof cover cracks me up though.
@Amuro
Those just look like some of the Robot Masters from the Gameboy Megaman games Sonic is fighting. Not really Badniks. I guess you can’t really make Robot Masters more robotic than they already are huh lol
@Tenko: Oh, are they? To be honest, outside of the Megaman X arc, I’m not too familiar with the entire Megaman universe.
@AutumnySprinkle
Mega Man has more detail, shading and and a rather dynamic pose, Sonic looks pretty uninspired and whatever the the thing between his eyes his is called (ridge maybe?) looks like it’s lifting up which is pretty damn creepy to think about.
The Mega Man style makeovers of team metal looks pretty cool though not exactly obvious at first glance.
Actually the Robot Masters Sonic is facing are the Genesis Unit from Wily Tower, a game released along remakes of Mega Man 1-3 for the Sega Genesis known as the Wily Wars. The Monkey is Buster Rod G, the Pig is Hyper Storm H, and The Green one is Mega Water S.
Actually… no, wait, MBM got it. Never mind.
@MBM
Yeah i remembered their names just not which one they came from. Thanks for that. Ha that’s a nice touch when you think about it tho. Sonic fighting the Robot Masters that were exclusive to the Mega Drive Wily Wars game haha
Oh my freaking goodness……The comics don’t look like crap anymore….it looks like something cool, but then again this is only the cover. It been a long time since I seen the comic and I used to hate the art sytle.
@MBM (or anyone who would know)
So one’s a pig, another’s a kappa, an the last is a monkey, there a “priest” to fill out these ‘Journey to the East’ robot masters?
@Skai Cyan
Nope those were the only three. The “Genesis Unit” as the game calls them. Built to stop Megaman climbing Wily Tower, the unlockable game mode after you beat Megaman 1-3 using the same save file. But you are correct, they are designed on the Journey to the West characters.
On a side note, I didn’t realize that the game was unreleased in the States in cart form. Apparently it was only available via the old Sega Net download service in the USA. Odd. We got a cart release here in New Zealand. I still got my copy on the shelf next to my old Sonic Mega Drive games ironically enough. Haven’t played it in years tho.
