The Meme Moves to a Digital Domain
If you’ve spent any time lounging around on the Internet this past month, you may know about the Harlem Shake craze going around. Simply put, the meme features one person dancing around for 10 seconds, with an entire group joining in thereafter. It’s all the to the tune of Baauer’s Harlem Shake,and it’s all not to be confused with the original Harlem Shake from the 1980s, known as the Albee.
The shake is sweeping Internet circuits, so it was only a matter of time before the dance was adapted to the gaming world. During February, GameRadar.com produced a short video that features Sonic as well as some other video game icons performing the Harlem Shake, including Bowser, Earthworm Jim, and Mickey Mouse. You can take a look at it below.
If nothing else, it’s a nice way to unwind after a long week…if the meme is your sort of thing. And it still shows Sonic, for all franchise’s ups and downs of late, can find a way to be cool with what’s cool today.

@Amuro:
A fad that’ll die even faster than it began i’m sure.
This meme is more forced than MLP.
@Shadowbane2009
Your last sentence makes me want to kill myself. I’m gonna go play some Ninja Gaiden…
@allx360 next thing they’ll revive the hamster dance and sonictize the absolute hell out of it.
@Skai Cyan if they ever criss cross the idea I will demand to be tortured by the omochao! ANYTHING BUT PONIES!!! Omochao is annoying enough but Ponies is where I draw the line!
my native language is spanish and this song made me laugh my ass off the first time i heard it xD it says “con los terroristas!!” (which literally means “with the terrorists”) voiced by a woman who sounds like an ultra-conservative old lady complaining about troublemakers
I’m not going to bother watching this to be honest.
God, what a bunch of miserable people you all are. Sound like a cranky old men.
Ever since Wreck it Ralph was released, I’ve always been looking at stuff like this in a new light. Internet fan parodies where characters from all over get together to share a little screen time, or games like Sega all stars/superstars, PS all Stars/SSBB or heck, even Comedy Night on Xbox Live when you see all the avatars get together dressed as different gaming characters.
Often you’ll find a Master Chief sitting quietly in the corner next to a killer clown with a New Jersey accent, my friend dressed as Dr. Doof from Phineas and Ferb and I’m usually dressed as either Ryo Hazuki, Dr. Eggman, Cortana or Vanellope from Wreck it Ralph just to prove said statement.
It’s just awesome how that movie can really make you think about what’s going on in your games a little differently, long after you’ve finished watching it.
(Granted the idea of video game characters getting together when humans arn’t paying attention is -NOT NEW-, neither was the concept behind Toy Story when that was first shown to the world but still, somehow it just feels right when Disney does it.)
Anyway I’m ranting about nothing, Hopefully Lara Croft and her killer dogs can share a Pepsi again sometime, Sony always makes kick ass gaming commercials…
@Sonaco
You think Gangnam Style is bad? Back when CGI first became mainstream we had the Crazy (F*cking) Frog to deal with.
WORST -MEME- EVER!!!
(Seriously that thing was a god forsaken demon, crawled out of Hell to take over the airwaves so it could make all our ears bleed. Hopefully Keanu Reeves took that little bastard out with a Shotgun. It deserved to die whatever it was…)
SEGA shared this on Facebook about a week ago. Already saw it.
I’m surprised to see so many other people on here agree that Gangnam Style was stupid. I don’t hate it, and I don’t hate Harlem Shake. I think it’s stupid and random, certain vids are likable but not by much. But I think a lot of viral fads are stupid because they become fads. It’s not the fad itself I find stupid as stupid as it may be, but people’s quickness to collectively jump from fad to fad.
I shot a Harlem Shake video last week for a group of people. But I didn’t edit it. It was a favor. lol It was then I discovered what Harlem Shake was. o0 A buncha people dressed up stupid and dancing like idiots. lol
