Another Strong Start for Sega and Hardlight’s Latest
Sonic Dash, the latest mobile game from Sega and Hardlight, has just about seen Sonic CD levels of success in its first day or so of release on the iOS App Store.
The game peaked at 2nd place in the Top Paid Adds on both iPhone/iPod and iPad. As of this article’s publication, Dash is currently sitting 3rd.
To directly compare, the first Hardlight Sonic effort, Sonic Jump, hit the #2 spot on iPad at its peak, but could only manage 4th on iPhone and iPod. And the mobile release of Sonic CD peaked at #1 on iPad, and #3 on iPhone and iPod.
The bottom line: Sonic Dash is another mobile success for Sega.

The game is an okay game
I’ve seen reviews on the Sonic Dash App Store Page that the game handles poorly on the iPhone 4, but runs and looks excellent on the 5.
They should really try to do something about that…
I do not like Sonic Dash. It seems like the game is designed to make you make in-app purchases or the progress becomes unbearably slow and drawn out as you repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat (you get the point) until you finally pass an objective without knocking into something or falling off the side. That is all garnished with just the same-old, same-old of jumping, rolling and homing attack, and I now cannot really play it anymore because I feel like I am playing a tied down mini-game, which is definitely not on the same level as Sonic CD where levels had creativity and immersion. In other words, this looks like a quick cash cow and not anything to be seriously considered, but if you are a diehard Sonic fan and need to have everything, get it.
^ Why the heck was Sonic CD even in your comment?
drooooiiiiidddd!!!! XD
@Ricardo
Probably because the article mentions it.
@Hifi
You’re wrong. The game is just as/more replayable as Temple Run 2. For gameplay, there is always a way to avoid the obstacles successfully, and if you think you won’t make it past a particular section you can boost past it to save yourself. I think in your case,you just don’t like Temple Run. Simple as that. At the same time, that doesn’t mean it isn’t good for non-Sonic fans since the type of gameplay is really popular just look at the downloads for Temple Run! I personally was very surprised by this game, it really went over my expectations.
^I hate temple run 2. I think it’s one of the most dissapointing mobile games ever. However I do really like games that share a similar style while begin more creative doing so like Subway Surfer and well, Sonic Dash!
It’s a fun game, but it seriously needs an update for the homing attack sections where you need to do this to clear a gap so you attack a Chopper: half of the time the damn thing is finicky on timing/actually swiping your finger upwards and I just end up falling into the water.
Other than this small issue it’s fun…if not a tad cheap like where you have to jump over something THEN IMMEDIATELY swipe over two spots to avoid a pit.

Welcome to mobile gaming. A lot of mobile gaming is like this^ nowadays.

Why are you comparing a quick arcadey ‘play this just to pass the time’ game to a full budget, old Sonic game that was reworked by a fan? Why was Sonic CD even in your comment?
The point of the game is just to basically get a cheap thrill of the idea of playing a 3D Sonic game on your phone: Sonic Dash at least accomplishes that much if nothing short of being a little cheap.
“In other words, this looks like a quick cash cow and not anything to be seriously considered,”
GEE NO FUCKING SHIT SHERLOCK
@MM2: Let it be clear: I respect your opinion and I am not here to make you feel inferior or wrong for it. Of course, I realize that the Temple Run genre is the current fad of mobile gaming which is why the game is of this style, but it does not fit my fancy which is my right to choose as it is for anyone else who plays any game in his or her leisure time, or who does anything at all in life for that matter, so please do not be offended by my opinion because my opinion is a my right of choice as is the same for yourself. Above all, my opinion is not something for me to enforce on others but it is also not something for others to backlash or degrade, either, because, at the end of the day, respect is a two-way street, not a demolition derby. So can we please be understanding of each other and try to help one instead of using labels and other derrogatory because we are a community, not a vast throng of vigilant rivals fighting with sword and dagger for the last word in something. Or even simpler: I understood you like the game. Good, I see that. Just remember this, the moral of the story: There is nothing wrong with being clear with your opinion as long as it is respectful, even if the rest of society loves to put on a mask to conceal their true selves, or their feelings and opinions for something. I love strawberry ice cream and I dislike Sonic Dash. Thank you!
@All: Even so, I just wish there was something more, stronger, deeper, and richer, because it seems like Sonic and crew were taken from their universe with a few of their trademakr items and then dragged and dropped into a Temple Run scenario with only a few tweaks here and there to make them sell-able when there could have been something to give it a definitive coolness or “wow” factor. Yes, I do not deny the eye-catching graphics, the pleasing music, the nifty upgrade interface, and the bug-free gameplay (my device: iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.2), but, for starters, how about adding a wider variety of item boxes and moves and taking off the enormous payment or ring requirements for upgrades? How about rails, rockets, karts, fire, lava, icicles, clouds and waterfalls for being interactive besides the very obvious materials, objects, and scenery involved in the gameplay? How about lightspeed dash, chaos emeralds and element shields to make Sonic and crew a little more adaptable to their environments? I see that this is a low budget game like you both have said, but can’t Sega and Hardlight step up their game a little more since Sonic fans have done much better with no budgets at all and much less time given it being a hobby, not a full-time career, not to mention that other companies have done more with smaller budgets, too?
Spice it up, breath some life into it, give it some character is all I am asking, because even for it being a game in its own genre or style of gameplay, it could have had that little bit extra of grace and charm to make it stand out among the rest of the pack. As always, YMMV and IMO. Good?
People keep harping on it being a pure ripoff of Temple Run which isn’t exactly the case, I guess bits like this from Unleashed ripped off a game from the future then.

Dash feels like the recent 3D games boiled down to their basics people don’t seem to want to admit this for obtuse reasons, Dash does a couple things better like how set pieces like loops and corkscrews don’t take away complete control. The multiplier for getting a combo of badnik kills is important again compared to the scripted chains in the Sonic 4 games.
The random placements of badniks and traps to dodge gives a bit of the thrill of playing a Unleashed/Generations level for the first time every time I play it.
@Hifihedgehog
It already stands out from the pack, it doesn’t have the shitty Superman 64 fog of the Temple Run games and is has far more visual variety than the 5 or so repeating objects that make up the entirety of Subway Surfers and isn’t a hard to follow graphically disaster like the new Pitfall. The responsiveness of the controls is far above any of those games, you can instantly cancel a jump into a roll and vice versa.
I enjoyed it at first, but the lack of more levels and variety is causing this to be a quick delete for me.
