Grab the Retro Engine update to Sonic 1

There never really was a specified date as to when, exactly, Taxman and Stealth’s updated version of Sonic the Hedgehog would see release. Perhaps that’s simply because it’s not a new release, and is being sent out as an update to existing owners of the game – or maybe it’s a result of Sega’s seemingly barely-existent PR department.

Whatever that reason is, it’s probably better suited for another article – because as of this writing, Sonic the Hedgehog version 2.0″ is out now for iOS. If you’re on an Android phone, you’ll have to wait for tomorrow to grab the update.

If you don’t already own Sonic the Hedgehog, you can buy it for the price of only $2.99. Information borrowed from iTunes follows:

Race at lightning speeds across seven classic zones as Sonic the Hedgehog. Run and spin through loop-de-loops as you collect rings and defeat enemies on your mission to save the world from the evil Dr. Eggman.

This re-mastered mobile version of the SEGA Genesis classic features the full “Sonic The Hedgehog” game, plus these EXCLUSIVE features:

NEW PLAYABLE CHARACTERS
Play as Sonic’s friends Tails & Knuckles for the first time. Use their unique abilities to fly, climb, and glide around levels offering exciting new ways to explore.

OPTIMIZED FOR MOBILE
Sonic The Hedgehog now plays in widescreen at a smooth 60FPS offering unrivalled performance and the game’s legendary soundtrack has been fully re-mastered.

CHALLENGE YOUR FRIENDS
Challenge your friends in the new Time Attack Mode and check out how you rank with Leaderboards and Achievements.

Note: It’s a new game! Your saved game files from previous versions will be incompatible with version 2.0.

While this is a monumental release, I still personally can’t help but feel more than a little bummed out that there have been no announced plans of applying this update to the sub-par Xbox Live Arcade or Playstation Network versions of Sonic.

We’ll be sure to let you know when Sonic 2 updates. Stay tuned.
