“Strategic partnership” Includes Still Unannounced Title

During today’s Nintendo Direct, scant details were dropped regarding the exclusivity of Sonic Lost World on Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS.  The game was part of a new partnership between Sega and Nintendo, but little else was revealed about said partnership and what it could mean for Sonic games on other systems.

Minutes ago, however, an article published by GamesIndustry International quoting Sega Europe COO Jurgen Post confirmed the details: Nintendo will either exclusively distribute or outright publish the next three Sonic games in Europe and Australia.  That includes Lost World, the next installment in the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series, and a third, currently unannounced Sonic game.

“Sega have chosen to exclusively partner with Nintendo to distribute or publish the next three Sonic the Hedgehog titles throughout Europe and Australia,” Post says in the article.  “This is a strategic partnership that does not affect our existing distribution network across these territories and with whom we are looking forward to working with on the upcoming releases of Total War: Rome II and Company of Heroes 2.”

According to the piece, this agreement is an extension of the agreement used to publish previous Mario and Sonic titles in these regions.  Sega will still publish Lost World in North America.

With this information, what was frankly baseless speculation in the immediate aftermath of today’s Nintendo Direct now becomes a real possibility: Major Sonic titles could very well be tied down to a single system again.  We wonder what you think of that possibility; tell us below in the comments.
