Can’t Even Crack 1900 Sold
Though expectations for a re-release can’t be too high, one still has to hope a title like Yakuza, wildly popular on the Playstation 3 in Japan, can still simply sell. Last week, when Yakuza 1 & 2 HD for Wii U saw release in Japan, it didn’t.
How bad was the number? Bad enough that according to reports, the game didn’t even crack the top 50 sales. The threshold for cracking the top 50, according to Dengeki Online, was just 1,878 copies.
Whether the game’s sales go up or down remains to be seen. If there isn’t improvement, it is a near certainty the Wii U port won’t come to the West, and there almost has to be serious consideration of Sega re-assessing its entire Wii U strategy. Currently, Sega has an exclusivity deal with Nintendo for Sonic Lost World, Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and a yet unknown third title. Nintendo also has permission from Sega to fund and develop Bayonetta 2 for Wii U through Platinum Games, but Nintendo has barely promoted another Platinum title slated for release later this year, The Wonderful 101–prompting designer Hideki Kamiya to occasionally criticize the company via Twitter.
