New programmers revive HD remake
Two years ago, after a bumpy road involving its first and only demo release, the fan-driven project Sonic 2 HD was canceled. The team behind the project were beyond fed up, and without a coder to keep forward momentum, everybody went their separate ways.
But now, it would seem, things are different. An update posted to the Sonic 2 HD Facebook page reveals the good news:
Hello everyone!
The only thing more surprising than seeing an official post from us here is our announcing that S2HD is no longer dead. You read that correctly: work has once again begun on Sonic 2 HD! That said, we’d like to give you all a brief tie-in for recent events leading to the project’s reboot.
As many of you know, the leading reason behind the project’s cancellation was due to the programming element being removed with no possibility of return in its existing form. As of last year, this changed. Before anyone raises the question, no, the former programmer and the S2HD team members have not had a reunion; instead, a fan of the project independently created and submitted his own engine to Vincent, the project leader, for evaluation. After integrating the art assets from the alpha release and successfully testing it, Vincent began to let the rest of the prior team members know, and we’ve picked up where we left off sans those who are unavailable due to real life obligations. Two other talented programmers have since offered their skills to recreate the game’s physics to match the original, and to port the game to the Mac OS platform (the latter of which is still in the earliest possible stage, and we have no estimate on when it will be playable, so stay tuned!).
In response to some of the questions we have seen, the Alpha Release build is officially discontinued and will not get any form of support as we do not have the source code. The next release will be entirely new programming from the ground up.
We’ll provide more details in how you can help us out in the next few days. It’s good to be back!
There’s not currently much to go on beyond the post above, but we’ll keep you posted as things develop.

Good to hear. Let’s hope it actually gets finished this time around.
Well, I think it is more than fair to say that absolutely nobody was expecting that! I thought that this project was as dead as the chances of Big the cat being playable in Sonic Boom!
It won’t get finished. Not unless Sega officially picks it up and starts funding it.
Oh, this is great! I was blown away by this remake when I played the beta, hope it’ll get done now…
And all I can think is “IT WAS TWO WHOLE YEARS AGO?!”.
Damn, time is fast.
twas awesome…forgot why it died anyways…but I’d keep it low profile…for as long as you can…just a suggestion.
I feel like Sonic 2 HD is made redundant because of the iOS port, but then again I hate playing on a screen with no buttons. I’ll probably give Sonic 2 HD a try
even though I doubt it’ll come outMAC?!? HELL YES! Finally something I can play on my laptop.
Aren’t alot of games available for Mac?
I’m confused… There was a Sonic 2 that appeared to have a complete vector art (not pixels) makeover.
Then there was this one, a 3 act demo, where it was pretty dang realistic, and gave Sonic Generations a run for its money. People say it was too cluttered, but I found it BEAUTIFUL.
… Which one was HD?
I don’t think Sonic 2 Taxman makes it redundant because… well the graphics and the engines are different.
Anyway, I’ll get excited when it’s actually finished. Until then it’s just meh.
the 3 act demo is Sonic Fan Remix
anyway take yer bets – full completion or 90% completed chemical plant?
They’re gonna need to put some nice additions into the game if they’re going to make their remake stick out from the mobile version. This should be worth following, especially after considering the talent supposedly behind the project.
I really hope Tee Lopes is involved with this on the music side like he was the first time round although seeing as he’s been dabbling in working on actual paid games like Major magnet I’m assuming that he’ll unfortunately be unavailable due to “real life obligations”.
He’s got at least half of the soundtrack 100% done, with the rest between 60% and 90% done. I hope he’s on board; he’s one of the best Sonic remixers around, especially since he knows how to make looping remixes work.
I second that, He is an amazing Sonic remixer and musician in general, I love the jazziness he injects into everything. I was just kinda worried that he’s working on a soundtrack for another game (Which I kinda suspect he is,or is at least chasing some kind of VGM career seeing as he hasn’t touched his Youtube channel in forever) which would obviously have to come before a fan project.
Well ain’t that nice. :3
YES!
Tee Lopes not finishing the Soundtrack is the least of S2HD’s worries. All of the tracks up to Oil Ocean are 100% (except Casino Night), and I highly doubt that Tee would shun the team the rest of the tracks, considering they are all almost (or even completely) done. This is all assuming that the game even gets up to Oil Ocean.
In short, Tee Lopes has already created enough tracks to keep the sound scene afloat for a while yet, so do not worry about him.
This is redudant now that we have the Mobile verison. Let it go
