The Market’s Getting Crowded
To think Sonic Boom wouldn’t have any significant competition in the video game market around its mid-November release date would be wishful thinking. But already, we’re getting an idea of what this important step in the Sonic franchise could face come that time.
There have already been indications the new Super Smash Bros. on Wii U could release a few short days after Rise of Lyric debuts. And today, Sony announced the Sumo Digital produced LittleBigPlanet 3 will be out the same day as Rise of Lyric, on November 18th. A Sony Playstation blog post details the game’s Day One edition on PS3 and PS4, with bonuses and other extras.
Certainly the argument can be made the systems are different, and therefore the audiences are different. But especially given we don’t have a specific timeframe yet for the Boom TV series debut, Sega certainly will have its work cut out for them with at least two major titles landing on or around the same period as Boom. The 3DS edition, Shattered Crystal, will release a week earlier on November 11th (though Nintendo’s official site claims it’s actually November 14th.) Right now, it doesn’t appear much will overshadow that release.
