After being active for not even but half a day since the announcement was made at Sony’s E3 2015 conference, the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter reached its “funding” goal of two million. And I use those quotes for a reason.
It was confirmed on Twitter and especially on Sony’s live stream, all that we’re about to elaborate on, that Sony is not only partnering with the Shenmue team, known as Ys Net, but funding it:
Sony is a partner for Shenmue 3 (in case it wasn't clear before)

It was also mentioned that they will “strongly support it”.
Sony wird mit Ys Net arbeiten, werden Shenmue 3 stark unterstützen

However there’s a catch. The Kickstarter wasn’t so much to fund the project but more so to gauge interest in it.
Shenmue III is being funded by Sony. Kickstarter is essentially to gauge interest. I'm sure someone's going to kick a fuss about that.

One thing is for sure. That interest was made very damn clear. Twitter trending for hours, the quickness of the Kickstarter raising funds breaking records, and the large amount of reactions containing loud cheers and tears being shed has really shown just how much the game was wanted after so many years.
And with the goal being reached a dream is now a reality.
