SEGA has been all over the place this year but the recent restructure seems to be going according to plan. There’s definitely a focus on mobile titles. A bigger one than originally realized. So that we’re even finding about titles that never released.
Discovered by Sonic Stadium is a proposed Sonic iPhone game called Sonic Motocross. The fan site explains what the game was supposed to be about:
The game was being developed by 2XL Games and judging by the above artwork it was to be a motocross type of game set in familiar Sonic stages. A quick look on 2XL Games’ website shows that genre to be their speciality on mobile devices. No reason is given for this game not seeing release, but if we had to guess, it’s likely due to clashing with the mobile release of vehicle racer Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and/or its sequel.
If we find out more on this title we’ll be sure to share the details with you.

This is probably going to be one of the wierdest mobile apps ever produced, and if Shadow is playable in this game, he’ll be riding his Chopper from the promo-art, but he can’t shoot a M1911?
You know, I would love another Sonic racing title in the vein of something like Riders. Even though, as detractors are quick to point out, Sonic can run fast, the presence of a vehicle helps to equalize the playing field, allowing for more characters to participate and for different approaches to be taken when it comes to gameplay.
Sonic Freeriders was a crushing disappointment (Sooo much wasted potential…) But hopefully they’ll revisit the series. I mean, Jet’s still showing up to Sonic’s other various outings, so it’s not like it’s Canon Discontinuity or something.
They should just make a new Sonic R with multiple vehicle choices. Sneaker (on foot/skates/etc.), Ex-Gear, Vehicle (cars/planes/bikes). “Sneaker” could be middle speed, high cornering, bad stops, performs better on paved road, limited usefulness on water. “Vehicle” would top-speed, poor cornering, great stops, performs better off track, horrible on water. “Ex-Gear” hit the center ground of lowest speed, good cornering, no full stops, no advantage or disadvantage on terrain or water. You could even make characters perform better with certain gear types (i.e. Sonic is better on “Sneaker”). With all that, they don’t even need to make it a “Kart” racer with items and such, but they could still have a mode with it if they wanted. A “For Fun” and “For Glory” if you will.
“Allowing for more characters to participate…”
And that would pretty much guarantee a critical thrashing of the game because it has characters other than Sonic and Eggman. Which pisses me off, because that’s what I and a lot of other fans have been asking of Sega for years.
Man, I hate that line of thought so much. The only time Sonic was ever my favorite Sonic character was when the only characters were Sonic and Eggman. Every time they introduce a new character his position changes for me because other characters are often times more interesting.
The critics sound really foolish with their hatred for the rest of the cast, especially when Sonic Heroes is the best selling 3D Sonic game at about 6 million units sold. The selling point of the game was the inclusion of 12 characters and 4 teams.
Majority of sonic characters can run fast, even Robotnik in the classics. That’s why sonic R makes sense conceptually. Imagine a video game where the flash races the road runner, but in cars… It doesn’t make sense. That’s how I still feel about all stars racing. If anything, amy should have roller blades.
Yuck, Sonic looks like Crash Bandicoot there.
It looks a LOT like Boom Sonic to me, even though they weren’t intending it to be. Even the environment looks like Boom. I wonder why…?
Yeah, I noticed that too. I wonder if this was created based on BRB’s artwork or if it’s a strange coincidence?
Or maybe Sonic’s Boom design was Sega’s doing all along but they made BRB take the credit for it in case it went over badly? /crazyconspiracytheory
I think the second option is very plausible. They probably used BRB as a human shield in case Boom failed- and it did. Scummy, but very likely.
Either way, can’t say that I miss this unreleased game. It doesn’t look like it would be a hit.
We had concept art of boom sonic show to us…. early concept art. It made the fan side of me cringe and have a stroke. That days, a piece of me almost died.
Might just be a coincidence. The image on the artist portfolio was posted sometime in May 2013 and was most likely not posted until well after Sega passed on the project. In the old UI mockups of ROL when it was known as Sonic Synergy, Sonic’s design was nearly finalized except he had his regular arm color instead.
It honestly looks like every single one of these online motorcycle flash games you see on ads everywhere. Only thing I will say, is I do kinda think the sneaker-boots Sonic has look kinda cool, but that’s the only thing I can say that looks decent about the mock up.
Also, new Sonic R, yes please, and please with the same level of beauty to the soundtrack that the first game had.
