The Sonic Movie Characters May Have Redesigns “But Nothing Extreme”

by December 26, 2016 57 comments

With 2017 starting next weekend, a present in the way of Sonic movie news has come in. Whether it’s a good present will be up for debate, however, as a familiar face has chimed in to say that he thinks that Sonic and other characters will get redesigns, but “nothing extreme”. The good news is that the intent to keep it looking and feeling like Sonic is still there. In fact, everyone wants that.

I suppose it’s to be expected, but it’s probably nothing to worry about.

    Van Brand: Nothing extreme
Hooded reflection of Van Brand: Make Sonic super taller, thinner, give him mouse ears, and a tatoo.

Calling it now, more detailed clothes, more visible fur (but well groomed) and little spikes.

Probably the most notorious change will be a more detailed musculature to the characters, still excited for this!

It isn’t out yet and the movie is already dead.

I’m sure it’ll be a geometrical redesign and not one with any additional features to the characters themselves. Sonic might have more detailed sneakers, Tails might have light pilot equipment, etc.

Eggman for damn sure will be redesigned for live action, and even if it ends up being 06′ Eggman Im still confident in the movie as it stands and look forward to seeing it.

The fact that it’s still being animated by Marza (same guys that did Night of the Werehog and all the openings) at least gives me some hope that it won’t be as horribly animated as say the Eddie Lebron fan-film, but as long as it isn’t “make the arms blue” or the level of all these stupid DeviantArt “hyper-realistic” redesigns.
You’re now treading on thin ice here guys, you don’t wanna end up like the new 2017 Power Rangers movie.

The question is now… which characters in the Sonic universe will make an appearance in the film and what redesigns will they receive?

That question probably won’t be answered until January 2018 at the very latest so yeah… a guy can speculate!

Why? Just why in god’s name do we have to end this year with the speculation that Sonic may get a redesign?

Not really. I don’t have to like the redesigns.

No. You just won’t make a big fuss over something little.

I, for one, am tire of them thinking s redesign is even needed when people will recognize how he looks as is. Unless it’s like a Sonic CD – Sonic Heroes type of redesign. But I won’t make a fuss. I have doubts for this movie after stuff I’ve seen in the past for game movies, for Sonic, and for the ones making the movie aside from Marza. But I’m not worried about it. XD

You don’t have to like them but you don’t have to be a whiny brat about them, especially before seeing them.

I’m sure some people may people fit that description and are both whiny and brattish.

However, it is perfectly reasonable to take this news as cause for concern. This movie continues to make baffling design choice after design choice that points to a very likely lack of familiarity/respect for the source material, so the announcement of a possible redesign (however “minor”), is most certainly something to be worried about.

If anything, the movie started off on the wrong foot with the whole “live action hybrid” thing, and now EVERY bit of news like this ought to be taken as a sign to brace for the worst. Guilty until proven innocent. We have been given absolutely zero reasons to put our faith in this project.

Ultimately, it may turn out that we were worried for nothing, and our fears were unwarranted. You will be allowed your “told you so” then. Until that time, neither this project, Sega, nor the brand itself, have really earned that level of devoted optimism.

I’d rather be pleasantly surprised than disappointed by something with this many red flags.

          @Chaoticfox

In other words you think is ok for people to be worried because they are not using the exact same character models from the games in the movie, well let’s just agree to disagree.

          @RAW

There’s making slight design tweaks, and then there’s saying your redesigning characters.

This is the same kinda thing that the new live action Power Rangers movie is screwing up on (aside from the whole fact that it seems to think dark, emo, angsty, and grim equals serious)
A slight tweak to the design would be something like how the 1995 Power Rangers movie altered the suits to be more armor-like yet still not going overboard.
With Sonic, he has an established iconic design and considering this is being animated by Marza who have done AMAZING work with the Modern Sonic design, why would it be so hard to slightly alter that design and just roll with that.

I think the last thing ANY of us want is a Sonic that looks like all those horrible “REALISTIC SONIC THE HEDGEHOG” pictures on DeviantArt, or even worse, the Lebron fan-film a few years ago.
          (never forget, Knuckles the Fingers)

It basically comes down to whether you believe the re-design is just the addition of detail, (a la denim pattern and stitching on Mario’s overalls), or refers to an actual change to the iconic design itself (a la Sonic Boom)

I don’t think anyone expected them to just cut and paste the exact character models from the latest game. I also don’t think they’d bother to make a specific announcement if it was just a matter of increasing the level of detail in the model. That would be absurd.

The correct answer is, of course, “just wait and see”. All I’m saying is we have far more reasons to be skeptical and worried than to be optimistic. If those of us with concerns are wrong, that can only be a good thing.

Same can’t be said for the other side, though.

I’m not worried about design tweaks. Just the whole live-action thing still.

Although it is funny how the whole “but nothing extreme” part is flying in one ear and out the other when it comes to a few of these reactions.

For real, a lot of people are expecting Sonic Boom levels of redesigns, no wonder why they don’t want to talk much about the movie yet.

As long as Knuckles hasn’t been ‘roiding lately and Eddie Lebron’s fan movie monstrosity of a 3D model isn’t a source of inspiration, I don’t see anything wrong at all with minor logical tweaks in color scheme and shape-related proportion.

seriously? what is the point in willing to redesign sonic and friends again? i mean the CG models from sonic generation are perfect, just take them like they are and put them in the movie, easy! sonic doesn t need wrap bands or more detailed fur. look at mickey mouse, he never changed his look , a red short pant and yellow shoes. no one wants it to change, it is his identity.

That’s what they said about Sonic Boom and The Smurfs.

What is it with Hollywood’s shallowness in changing everything to appeal to a broader (lowest common denominator) audience. If you’re not going to be faithful to the source material, don’t do it at all.

And why do they pick random days to tell us this kind of information in small bits and pieces? Was this part of one of many interviews concerning the movie?

I remember reading about Sonic Adventure 2 in an old gaming magazine how Sonic could have realistic fur and how the graphics were going to be incompatible to anything else out. We never got the former but after seeing it in Sonic Unleashed in his Werehog form I think there could be a happy place in the middle.
