    Cautiously optimistic about Project ’17.
I can put up with either an edgy teen angst story or a try-hard unfunny one, as long as the core gameplay is actually good.
I somehow doubt they’ll be showing much gameplay, but I hope I’m wrong about that.

With Mania, I think I’ve seen enough to say that I’m comfortably sold. Unless Sega somehow entirely fucks the dev team so late in development, I’m certain the game will at the very least be good fun, if it doesn’t somehow manage to rival even the classics.
And honestly, I’d rather them not show much else. We’ve already seen act 1/2 of Green Hill, Studiopolis, and Mirage Saloon, all incredible looking stages, but I’d like to have the majority of the game a surprise for when it’s released so most of us can actually experience that joy first hand.
Instead, I hope they show off more side things, like how the special stages will work, features we may not know about, and maybe even slip in a boss from the aforementioned already revealed stages.

We’re less than 3 days away, so we’ll see in due time.

I’ve actually watched very little Mania gameplay, as I want my first experience of the game to be as blind as possible.

Seeing the jaw-dropping transition from GHZ Act 1 to Act 2 is what made me realize that I probably should stop spoiling the game for myself. If they decide to reveal more, which is honestly fair in terms of marketing, I’ll just try to avoid it.

SatAM hasn’t been relevant in 24 years. It’s not happening. Sonic Team probably hasn’t even read Archie Sonic nor watched SatAM. They don’t care about anything that’s not in their games, except for maybe Sonic X, but that’s only because Sonic Team had some involvement with X’s production.

Paramount Piglet, the Satam game on Sega Genesis got canceled. Sonic Retro may have early concepts of it.

Sonic Chronicles was very close to being the Satam/Archie game you may of been looking for. But, the game may not of been well-recepted or didn’t sell well. Swatbots… Robotropolis… the dark echidna brotherhood…

Perhaps, modern Sega wouldn’t of made a low-budget outsource to Bioware. Sonic Chronicles was the chance… but they screwed it up.

Sonic SatAm games were planned around the Sonic X-treme era. Sega Technical Institute had them in concept.

Sonic Retro has some info on this.

At Sonic Retro, SatAm Robotnik’s sprite sheet was discovered in SegaSonic Arcade’s rom. It wasn’t used in the final game, but the spritesheet for Sonic SatAm Robotnik is in the game files

It is too bad Sonic Chronicles didn’t work. out

So, what about the “fastest thing alive” achievement? Chilidog references? Archie Comics rubs-in Satam. Sonic Boom has Ian Flynn as a writer. The western Sonic fanbase is more revelent than the Japanese Sonic fanbase.

You can say Satam wasn’t relevant in 24 years, yet it is CONSTANTLY discussed by the western Sonic community. So, SatAm may have a chance of being referenced in future Sonic games.

Is the “Sonic’s the name, speed’s my game” a direct AOSTH reference or coincidence? If Princess Sally is referenced, would you just blame Ken Pontac?

If even SatAm isn’t referenced in a Sonic Team game, spinoffs like Sonic Boom, Sonic Chronicles, or Mania-type games may possibly include SatAm references.

Or, Ken Pontac could use Youtube and get ideas. I do know that “Sonic’s the name, Speed’s my game” originated from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. I also highly suspect that Sonic’s rapid consumption of chili-dogs in recent games is a AOSTH/SATAM reference.

Of course, an achievement/trophy in one of the Sonic games is titled, “The Fastest Thing Alive.”. That is from a Sonic Team game. Probably Sonic Unleashed or Sonic 06.

If Sonic Team was so unaware of Satam, that wouldn’t be the case. But, Sonic’s love of chilidogs is recently getting rubbed in.

The question that boggles me is this: If SEGA is supposed to own ALL Sonic properties(including Archie &SatAm) why doesn’t SEGA use them in any of the games?I know many characters aren’t used by SEGA, so why would they make so many to only use a few. I’ve heard a rumor that the head of Sonic Team hated the Western Sonic, but I can’t find a valid confirmation. Does anyone know?

          Tomoki 15 March, 2017, 07:01

Also, those SatAM references in Generations are only in the English Localization of the game. That shit is NOT in the Japanese version. SEGA America likes to throw in dumb references like that in their localizations all the time. Hell they stupidly added a ‘Gotta Go Fast’ meme reference to Yakuza 0, a game it has no damn place being in. But it’s there, because SEGA America thinks references and dumb memes are funny, and like to shove it down our throats.

          @Paramount Piglet:

Yes, it’s true. Sonic Team, at least, the original Sonic Team in the 90s hated the western version of Sonic. SEGA America and Sonic Team often got into fights over how the series should be handled back in the day, going as far back as the series conception in 1991; Sonic Team originally wanted Sonic to have wilder spikes with visible fangs, and be in a rock band with a human girlfriend named Madonna, and SEGA America made them remove those elements, leading to the first wave of conflicts. These conflicts are also why Sonic was marketed very differently in Japan compared to America and Europe, along with why there were 2 different canons- an American localized one, and the original Japanese one.

And according to an old interview regarding the development of…. Sonic Spinball, I think? Some of the devs noted that Sonic Team got to see a pilot of AoStH and their reactions were ‘stone-faced’, implying they weren’t amused with the show’s take on their characters.

But that was back in the day when Naka and Ohshima were still around. Naka was the one that wanted to ‘unify’ the Sonic series between the west and the east, and why they stopped using ‘Mobius’ and ‘Robotnik’ in favor of ‘Earth’ and ‘Eggman’ in the English adaptations, but at the same time, decided that ‘Robotnik’ was Eggman’s official ‘real’ name, while ‘Eggman’ is now officially his ‘nickname’.

Don’t forget, Sega considered calling Jaleel White for Sonic Generations. Jaleel said he was never contacted, but Sega is very aware of Satam.

Jesus, that’s a ridiculous amount of responses to just a small post. Okay, so they made a few references, and the stuff you pointed out weren’t exclusive to SatAM anyway, so what? Sonic’s love Chili Dogs originated from AoStH, not SatAM. Archie and SatAM characters are not going to be used in the games. Ian Flynn is writing episodes for Boom now, sure, but that doesn’t mean he’s allowed to throw in Archie stuff into the show. SEGA’s very strict on what’s allowed in the games, comics, and show, and they seem to want to keep them all separated, outside of a few nudges and references.

Again, Archie and SatAM in SEGA Sonic stuff ain’t happening, and hell, there’s rumors that the Archie comics might be getting cancelled. All the legal shit caused by Archie, Ken Penders, and the others will probably make SEGA want to avoid bringing Archie Sonic characters into the official canon. And by the way, you mentioned Chronicles, well guess what, Sonic Team had no involvement with the game, and Ken Penders had filed a lawsuit against SEGA and EA over that shit game ripping off his stories in the comics, so that makes the likelihood even more slim.

It’s not happening. I swear, this happens EVERY time a new Sonic Team game is announced. SEGA Sonic, Archie Sonic, and Boom Sonic are all segregated, and SEGA wants to keep it that way. Hell, they’re even trying to segregate Classic Sonic from Modern Sonic now. The series will always be divided, just like the Sonic fanbase.

That’s all I have to say on the matter.

Can’t wait for Sega to prove that Project 2017 isn’t Sonic Generations 2, which is the last thing I want from them, considering I hated Generations.

Don’t hold your breath on that. From what we’ve seen so far, all signs are pointing towards it having significant influence from Generations. Save yourself the disappointment and go in with that expectation.
And if it’s something else, all the more reason to be pleasantly surprised.

That’s nice to know. I’m just shocked at everyone else who have these high expectations for the two games. I mean, neither one will be masterpieces but I at least hope they’ll be great at the most.

Let’s just be happy seeing some new info on the games for once, people. We’re not getting something that’s award winning or anything.
But knowing from what the trailers, footage and recent news we’re getting, I could be wrong.

    I know I am.
It’s because these are internetting Sonic fans. It’s the Internet personality.

I saw Mania at the Sonic Party and was like “I don’t recognize that classic stage. Wtf? WAIT IT’S A NEW CLASSIC GAME??! WTF?? COOL!! 8D”

Then I saw P17 and was like “Cool!! 8D”

It’s not going to be Gens 2 literally, but if you consider the 2 Sonics with 2 gameplays feature a “Gens 2”, then it’s very very possible. But it looks like a new story that’ll have “cool” in it again that ppl complained about alongside the gameplay ppl praised after fixing gameplay ppl complained about. Colors and Generations were both really popular and it just took a while for haters to come out and make it sound like no one likes them cuz the praisers already finished praising.

Now when I say “haters”, I mean that loosely in this case to represent ALL who dislike the games, whether actual haters or not. So I’m not using it as an insult. Everyone likes different things.

That said…. some of you are bound to dislike one or both of these games. If so, I’m sorry to hear that and hopefully something YOU like will come up soon. And if you feel like you’re just not into Sonic anymore, that’s fine. :p
