Famitsu Has Released New Information On Sonic Mania & Forces, Iizuka Interview

by April 12, 2017 23 comments

A new interview with Takashi Iizuka was included in the latest issue of Famitsu, along with info on Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces. What we’ve learned is below, most of which translated by various people, including SourceGaming and Woun. Nothing about Sonic Mania was of much note:

  • The third character in Forces will be an “unexpected character”. Sonic Boom Sonic is NOT in the game. However, the third character “plays an important role in the story, and embodies the overall features of the game”.
  • There is a circular ring of white stars above a Mirage Saloon screenshot in Sonic Mania, suggesting the return of Sonic 3’s bonus stages.
  • “The boost system from Sonic Unleashed is present, as well as stages based on reaching the goal and clearing them a certain time limit also seem to be present.”
  • “Classic Sonic stages are based on side scrolling 2D action.” Apparently, they will also have a twist.
  • Sonic Forces will be at E3 this year. We are told that E3 will be where the third character will be revealed.
  • Sonic Forces’ story summary from the magazine: “Dr. Eggman took over 99% of the world. Sonic and the “Resistance” members are fighting. Then another Sonic appears…” It then talks about Classic Sonic appearing, Classic and Modern being two different style, and then there being a third one. The reason why Eggman takes over so much of the world is because of “a new power” that his obtains, resulting in his army controlling that much of the world. However, this power is also what makes Classic Sonic appear.
  • Morio Kishimoto is the director of Sonic Forces. He designed Secret Rings and Black Knight. He also directed Sonic Lost World and the Wii version of Sonic Colors.
  • Sonic Forces has been in development since 2013, and started around Sonic Lost World’s release.
  • “Forces was chosen as a subtitle from it meaning “power” and “army”. Two strong forces (Sonic and co vs. Eggman) are facing off in the game.”
  • “This time, Sonic is fighting an Eggman who has nearly taken over the world.”
  • 2017, with the release of Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania, is a “continuation” of Sonic’s 25th anniversary.
  • The game won’t be all dark and gloomy. There are some lighter stages in Forces.
  • Sonic Mania’s development began in 2015. Sonic Team wanted to do a new 2D Sonic game and “not a remake”.
  • The general rule for the art of Sonic Mania was to be above the level of Genesis, but under the level of Saturn.
  • The gameplay for Mania is similar to Sonic 3’s. The elemental shields were mentioned, but just that they are returning (that, we already knew).

“Unexpected character” makes it sound like it isn’t a completely new Sonic character, but just one who has not been introduced into the canon yet, but has appeared in other games or media. Like some people are speculating, this new character could be Shade, but it’s very unlikely. I’m still assuming it will be a future Sonic or a Sonic from a different dimension.

Also Famitsu had some new scans for the game. For some reason, the picture showing Sonic running from behind looked like a beta shot. That, or dynamic lighting just wasn’t implemented when that screenshot was taken. Because the 40 seconds of gameplay looks a lot better in comparison, but even that is still in early progress.

Four years of development for a Sonic game…that’s frankly awesome and gets me really excited.

Too bad with all that development time Forces looks to be just another Boost-Fest..

          “another boost-fest”

It’s just one-third of the game..

          “Boost-fest”

Agreed. I am kind of tired of this Sonic-on-rails concept with the Hedgehog Engine. How about something a little more open and geared toward exploration? (Cue the trolls who cite Sonic the Hedgehog ’06 and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, disregarding that those games that were poorly managed and developed independent of their respective genres.) Someday, we will hopefully get some semblance of a Sonic game with open worlds. If not from SEGA, hopefully from the fan base and hopefully beyond a single level though Sonic Utopia is fantastic.

I still think that Sonic Forces is set in an alternate dimension.

Seems like Forces is referencing the comics a bit. Would be very interesting if that turned out to be the world the third style was from the comics, and the third, unexpected character was Archie Sonic? What if it’s got some weird comic book 3D game style twist? That would be pretty unexpected.

So much so that I’m obviously just saying that it’d be cool, not so much saying I speculate this happening. lol

Well, if boom sonic not gonna appear, that I’m cool with that. Since Sonic Forces gonna be at E-3 2017 and revealed the new playable character, does that mean that SEGA will have there own booth this year at E-3 2017 SSF1991?. SEGA didn’t get a chance to have there own booth in 2015. So, I was hoping all of us want to see SEGA have a chance to get there own booth at E-3 2017.

My guess is that the third character will be ‘Future Sonic’ an older version of the character.

Classic Sonic is the Sonic of the past.

Modern Sonic is the Sonic of the present.

So it only makes sense that the third character will be an older, possibly more badass, less humorous Sonic.

If they do a “future Sonic” version, they sould use it on next franchise games, don’t? I think it’s better create a new whole character or use an character who we already know (just like Silver or Shadow, idk, the “Unexpected character” thing really sounds like a character who we already know.

Just because the game mark the “””return””” of boost gameplay, this don’t mean they can’t do something new with. And even if they don’t, there are 2 another gameplays. I can accept this, Sonic was always crushed by the media because of Sonic Team and his obsession with innovation/trying something new. And you guys should accept that Sonic fans is also hard to accept something new. Sonic Team learned that: if isn’t broken then don’t fix it.

Remember, this is probably the last year we meet with classic Sonic again (because after 2 games with him, 1 exclusive of him, and Lost World trying to remember him, I think they totally done with that) and boost-formula. Sonic Team gonna meet the hard times once again with Sonic franchise trying to do Something new, because even Iizuka thinks if you use the same formula too much to do new games, the player gonna feel like it’s playing just a new version of older games. Maybe we meet with classic Sonic in future, like in 10 years… but for now, they prettu much done with him.

Boom Sonic has to be more nervous than a a studio that EA has just asked to take a long walk into the dessert with them

Okay so they DO have a reason for Classic Sonic appearance unlike with Wisps.Waiting to see what power Dr.Eggman is possessing.

While it’s never stated in game, it’s implied in game that the wisp have made it their job to always help Sonic since he saved them (Which explains them in Lost World) and the creator said that the wisp are now a important and permanent part of Modern Sonic’s gameplay so they have reason, not a solid one, but a reason

Unless that same reason being why Wisps are present. Since this new power brought Classic Sonic back, it is also making the two worlds collide. If you watch the gameplay trailer, you can see that Green Hill is colliding with the city somewhat, so it might be set in another dimension that’s pulled elements of Sonic’s past and future together. OR. It’s set in modern Sonic’s present and the past is colliding with the present but it’s not set in another dimension.

… What if he’s FANG the Sniper, and he’s looking for his hat in a world dominated by Eggman? O_O

I mean, sure, Fang has 2 whiskers instead of 3…
