Archie Will Be At San Diego Comic Con After All, “Archie Comics Forever: Riverdale and Beyond” Event Planned

It turns out that previous reports about Archie Comics at San Diego Comic Con were wrong. They will be there, and they even have an event planned for news and announcements called “Archie Comics Forever: Riverdale and Beyond”. Coincidentally, it will be taking place on the one-year anniversary of the Sonic 25th party, where Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania was revealed, and will last for an hour. Here’s the description:

Celebrate the new era of Archie Comics with news and announcements about your favorite Archie titles and The CW’s hit Riverdale TV show. Featuring Jon Goldwater, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Mike Pellerito, Alex Segura, Dan Parent, Jesse Goldwater, and others.
Saturday July 22, 2017 1:00pm – 2:00pm PT (4-5pm Eastern)
News for comics definitely seems to be the theme here, along with Archie as a whole. They also said that “your favorite Archie titles” will see news and announcements. Despite that, we have absolutely no idea if this means Sonic news, or even if anyone representing that branch of Archie will be there. Still, if what Ian Flynn has suggested earlier this month is true, this would very likely be the best place to hear anything. As for the names that were listed, here’s what they do for Archie:
Jon Goldwater: Archie Comics CEO, Riverdale Executive Producer
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa: Archie Chief Creative Officer, Executive Producer/Developer For Riverdale
Mike Pellerito: Archie Comics President
Alex Segura: Archie Comics Writer/Editor
Dan Parent: Archie Comics Writer/Artist
Jesse Goldwater: Archie Creative Consultant
The vast majority of them are primarily Archie staff, not necessarily Riverdale staff, although we don’t know who the “others” are. But as with everything Archie has been doing so far this year, more questions have been raised than answers. We will try to get any developments from the event over to you as best as we can. With the Sonic hiatus ongoing, coverage of this may be more necessary than ever.

So Archie will be at the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con after all, but will the announcement of the Sonic comic book line fate come – either Archie keeps it or it gets passed on to another comic company (Hope the new Sonic rights from Sega go to the publisher of the My Little Pony and Transformers comic books that starts with the letter I, of course!)

If it doesn’t stay with Archie and goes somewhere else, that’s where I’d want it to go too. But you don’t need to mention in every article comment section. That DOES get kind of obnoxious. Mentioning it every five minutes won’t just will it into reality, man.

Okay, so I won’t find out until after the SDCC for the next Archie Sonic fate update or so…

I submitted on the knowledge that they are not having a booth on the exhibition floor. My bad.

(@SSF1991: Fyi, starting with “News for comics definitely seems to be…” there seems to be some issue with the article’s formatting that makes all the text bunched together. Tested on FireFox and Chrome.)

Geez, this whole thing is a roller coaster. First there’s no Archie, then there IS Archie. And now we can only guess what’s going to be covered at this thing. As far as Sonic goes, I hope it’s only good news, or at the very least “not-as-bad news”, cause I’m not sure how much more of this I can take.

      Why “not-as-bad-news”?

See Raw’s comment below. At this point, as long as it doesn’t mean cancellation and we still get good Sonic stories in comic form, I’ll settle for anything, even ANOTHER reboot.

          @Hero

Same here man, I’m already expecting the worse so I wouldn’t mind another reboot as long as there is still a comic to go to.

Agreed, at this point any news that are not entirely bad would be welcomed, I wouldn’t even mind another Reboot as long as Sonic still has a comic.

Wait, will Ian Flynn himself be at SD Comic-con? That might be the perfect venue to ask him whether or not he is writing Sonic Forces. God, I hope he is. After the last couple of games, SEGA could use a storyteller who actually gets the characters.

If the Sonic comics end up with any other company on the off chance we will never see the built up Archie and SatAM characters ever again.

Not necessarily. The SatAM characters’ rights are likely still with Cookie Jar/DHX, while the current Archie creative team likely has contracts “folding” the rights to their characters and stories into SEGA of America’s ownership. Therefore, in a comic transferral case, while there might be some trouble getting the SatAM characters back, I don’t see why SEGA of America would refuse licensing of the remaining Archie Sonic characters from Issue #160 and beyond.

I hope we get results of the Sonic comic fate – either Archie keeps it or the rights go to another comic book company – at the San Diego Comic-Con next weekend, keep your fingers crossed!

What if cancellation is confirmed, it won’t move to other publishers, and SEGA says they wanted it.

So that means if there is a new rights from Sega with another comic company announced soon as possible if not Archie – even with a possible San Diego Comic Con 2017 announcement – the SatAM characters (even Sally Acorn!) will stay for the transfer? But let Ken Penders’ Sonic characters stay out of this even if Ken never gets his Lara-Su Chronicles off the ground!
