Sonic NYCC 2017 IDW Event: Q&A Info

  • Crossovers were asked. It will be a while. Maybe a year. They want to get the current series established first.
  • Previous writers coming back? “There may or may not be some creators you know and love”.
  • SEGA does impose certain “restrictions” on the characters, but the comics allow for the freedom to do things they can’t do in the games. Primary job is to “tell the best stories possible”.
  • The Freedom Fighters returning? “Stay tuned”. They’re aware of the demand, though.
  • The comics will start completely fresh with issue #1.
  • “We’re specifically making this world built in a world IDW controls separate from the games”. Aaron is at the event. He added more to say there might be occasional tie-in with a game, but stay tuned.
  • They made a big deal about the comics being a fresh start with characters and they’re telling brand new stories. It was their answer to multiple questions.
  • Modern Sonic is the focus. No multiple versions of Sonic running around, including Classic Sonic.
  • SEGA’s restrictions are not that high. They just want to make sure that they do things properly without jumping the shark.
  • IDW’s thoughts on Sonic the Comic: “For now, we really want to establish a new Sonic comic. Our focus is on something new and exciting.”
  • Aaron says that “things happened” on why the Archie era story arc suddenly stopped the way they did, but he says that sometimes these kinds of things happen. “There are reasons – trust us. I wish we could go into more detail. It’s tough for us too.”
  • Will IDW have its own Sonic Universe? “We’re taking nothing off the table, but we’re focusing on the brand-new series right now.”
  • They may create some original characters.
  • “How many of you would want to see a Sonic Forces comic?” Crowd cheers. “Good to know, we’ll pass that on.”
  • There was a question about backstory on the characters in Sonic Forces. Aaron’s answer: “wait and see”.
  • Open to audience reaction: how would original IDW characters factor into the stories? TONS of support for annoying sidekicks.
  • Creative process for the comics? “Ian has an incredible imagination – he could write these comics forever.”
  • Apparently Ian had his pitches ready for IDW immediately.
  • “We can use anything from the games.”
  • Ken Penders was brought up, asked if he was behind this. Only answer? “I don’t know who that is”.
  • There will be new artists. Wait and see.

Like an election, it is too soon to tell if Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters will be part of IDW Sonic. Give several months between now and the first 4 issues in April 2018.

My question is WHY did they avoid answering about the Freedom Fighters??
Did they just want us to keep anticipating the release, or were they not able to carry them over, and weren’t willing to give us the news?? Either way, now that Ian Flynn’s confirmed to return, could he be able to give us the Freedom Fighters back, like with the reboot??

Even if he can’t, we still have fans that keep Sally and gang alive through fan fiction, and 3d models like this:

There is the possibility that they are not returning and they avoided those questions just to keep the panel negativity-free, that or perhaps they will undergo very big changes that they can’t talk about right now.

But I’m pretty sure they will live on through fan support, moreso if they don’t return in the comics.

I disagree – it’s TOO SOON TO TELL about Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters in IDW Sonic. Wait until we get closer to the first 4 April 2018 IDW Sonic issues. So keep it – ANCIENT CHINESE SECRET…

Shame about the classic era not being supported, the fleshed out classic era storytelling in Archie was really well done, and they were about to do a Sega Sonic Arcade arc too. I don’t see the issue as long as they make it clear it’s in the past or a backstory. I am pleased with Ian being head writer, and the possibility that Tyson will be back to some degree tho.

Can I/we start a net petition to IDW to get Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, Antione, and Rotor to be part of IDW Sonic the Hedgehog either in time for the April 2018 comic book relaunch or in a possible second title called Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM 1993 (based on the 1993-1995 Sonic cartoon series that was adventure leaning)? How can I make an online petition somewhere for this that I/we can send to IDW? What sites can you make online petitions? I know is one.

Sounds to me like there is a possibility the Freedom Fighters return. That’d be great, especially with Ian guiding their new direction. Hope they are back. Fun times.

I wish i had time to ask them, especially aaron about sally and the freedom fighters relevancy to today, to me at the panel it fell sort of hypocritical, reason being for years people found them sorta out of place, not fitting in with sonic, they don’t appear in games, etc etc, and now with a chance they gone, it feels people are back pedaling because how somewhat abrupt it ended and now they want them to return. I am not saying everyone at the panel is hypocrites, i am just saying it feels that way at times when i seen people here and other websites scream at the top of their lungs(or their keyboards whatever lol) how they hate these characters and archie stuff and should be more closely to the sonic games or just adapt the games and expand on them. Sega saw this obviously and probably feels the same way about them being relevant to the brand anymore and is probably one of the reason for the change to the cast of the genesis wave, we know a certain someone was probably a deciding factor but like aaron said they were list of reasons why they couldn’t continue, and i wouldn’t be surprise if relevant to continue with characters from a decades old cartoon in a comic book is not one of them. And i wouldn’t be surprise sega think that way because people who just screaming how much they hate them, and how out of place they are. i guess its one of those don’t know what you got till its gone things, and i wonder if sega is confuse now seeing this outcry for them, or maybe they not confuse, but i wish i had the chance to ask Aaron and Michael how does sega or in this case them about the importance to these characters to the sonic brand in comics, are these characters even relevant anymore? can they become relevant again? do sega share the same feelings for these characters as people do for them.

“We can use anything from the games.” Does that include Somic Chronicles? I thought that game was off limits because of Ken Penders.
