The Teased IDW Sonic Character Is Tangle The Lemur, Sonic #4 Cover Revealed

by January 24, 2018 77 comments

IGN has exclusively revealed the character that IDW has been teasing for a week now. It’s a brand new character, Tangle the Lemur. There were some interesting remarks from IDW’s David Mariotte. We also got to see the cover for Sonic #4, which features Tangle and the return of Blaze.

After over 300 issues at Archie Comics, IDW Publishing acquired the rights to make Sonic comics from Sega in 2017 and are rebooting the series with a fresh #1. Starting over from scratch gives IDW and series writer Ian Flynn the chance to shake things up and add new things to Sonic’s world, and Tangle is one of them.

“Before she even had a name, we knew we wanted her to be like a lot of other great Sonic characters and have a special ability tied to one of her features. Think Tails or Knuckles,” IDW associate editor David Mariotte told IGN in an email interview. “So, we were brainstorming animals who could do cool stuff and a ring-tailed lemur who could use her tail alternately like a whip or like a fist was too cool to pass up! Throw in her scrappiness, she likes to ‘tangle’ with bad guys, and you have an awesome character!”

As for whether Tangle will appear in any video games, Mariotte couldn’t say, as that decision lies exclusively with Sega.

This is their chance to have Sonic be a free character for once. Do not fuck this up! I do not want this to have a single shred of Sally in her. No Freedom Fighter leader, no treating Sonic like a child, no pulling rank, no monarchy, no charges of treason, no new main love interest, no nasty break-ups!

This is Sonic’s world and series, and he should have as much freedom as he does the the video games. He didn’t need anyone like that in Scrap Brain Zone, not in Crystal Egg Zone, not on the Death Egg, not against Metal Sonic, not in the Egg Fortress, not against Knuckles on Angel Island, not as Super Sonic in space, not against Fang, not in Eggman’s labyrinth, not in Silver Castle Zone, not in Puppet Panic Zone, not in X-Zone or XX Zone (Advance series), not on the Egg Carrier, not with Perfect Chaos, not on the Space Colony Ark, not against Neo Metal Sonic, not against Emerl, not against Gemerl/Non-Aggression, not against Eggman Nega, not against the Babylon Rogues, not against Erazor Djinn, not in Blaze’s world, not against Merlina, not against Nega Wisp or Mother Wisp, not against the Time Eater, not against the Deadly Six, not against Infinite, and definitely not now!

If we’re really going a new route with this comic, it had better be greater than anything we could’ve ever imagined. Greater than Super Mario Odyssey, Sonic Mania, Ocarina of Time, Diddy Kong’s Quest, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario Bros. 3, Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Galaxy, the two Adventure games, and Sonic Generations.

Reading this guy’s comment, it’s clear that he didn’t read a comic in forever, and stayed light-years away from the post-SGW timeline.

      It’s hilarious tbph

I HAVE read those issues, and not much has changed, not that it changes any of listed peeves (lack of a stronger word). The changes (based on the mandates SEGA gave Archie) in the SGW retcon do not make me any less strict about the above list.

look remember new book new story, IDW when they were negotiating waaaaaaay back in January/February would’ve gone to SEGA and said what can we have etc, they also would’ve said what shouldn’t we do without getting into trouble with ARCHIE/Penders and all who may wanna piece of IDW for royalties etc.
We know the Freedom Fighters belong to SEGA but if they are not important to the story at the moment then let them sit on the sidelines for awhile, let us have a new mythology/universe to play with, look what IDW have done with TMNT & TRANSFORMERS & G.I JOE they didn’t throw 100’s of fan favourite characters straight away, they waited for the best moment look at BeBop and Rocksteady in TMNT it was like 30 issues until we saw them officially, IDW know the whole legal thing and don’t want anything to do with any old stuff right away, if they appear in issue 50 that’ll be cool. And also I said this back in July if any character is created you can be damn sure they will be officially canon and SEGA owned from now on.

And it took a long time until last year for Usaji Yojimbo, who guest starred in some 1980’s TMNT episodes, to appear in the TMNT comics in a one shot issue, but via IDW, never with Archie.

One thing to hope for: Archie comics files for bankruptcy any day now, then quickly IDW buys the Archie assets, the current Archie comics line moves to IDW, then finally IDW can agree with Sega to use Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters in IDW Sonic sometime between the end 2018 or after 2019 begins more or less.

One more thing about IDW: I’m glad Launchpad McQuack is part of the 2017 rebooted Disney DuckTales series, even in the IDW DuckTales comic.

You’re playing metal gymnastics with yourself to avoid the truth: SEGA didn’t want to use those characters for no reason other than not liking them. They could have easily just rebooted the characters using the templates from SATAM avoiding anything from Archie and they’ve chosen not to. Ian had to fight with SEGA to keep the SATAM characters around during the soft reboot of the Archie book which informs whey they aren’t here.

Maybe Ian should fight with Archie again to have IDW buy Archie comics and get the Freedom Fighters rights back.

Of course, Archie once tried to strike a deal with Tribune Content Agency to do a Dick Tracy comic book for 2018 launch but cancelled plans due to some licencing dispute.

Archie has the rights from Marvel Comics to do Marvel Super Heroes (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.) in comics digest form.

Maybe IDW should acquire/buy Archie Comics. Then that way Sega and IDW can approve Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters to be part of IDW Sonic.

Sega owns the freedom fighters! And how do you know that Archie still owns them? Give us a real proof next time.

I wouldn’t hate Tangle. Even there’s a lot of Tangle fan art now when the comic doesn’t get released with her debut for another 3 months!
