Sonic Movie Executive Producer Tim Miller: “I have [Seen Sonic’s Redesign]… And I Think The Fans Will Be Pleased”

A new Variety interview with Sonic movie executive producer Tim Miller had a couple of interesting questions at the end:

You’re an executive producer on “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which was also due out in November but pushed to redesign the main character after fans protested. How was that experience?

When “Sonic” arrived, the director, Jeff Fowler, was the best guy to do it. The redesign? Look, I was with fans and so was Jeff. This is a franchise, and it has to be great. When the s–t hit the fan, I went over there and said, “The most important thing to do, man, is say, ‘I f–ked up.’” He’d already sent a tweet out an hour before I got there. He’s a good man. It was exactly the right way to handle that. The fans have a voice in this too. There’s a right way to listen.

Have you seen any of the character redesign?

In fact I have. And I think the fans will be pleased.

I’m glad he himself can also admit he messed up, I just hope that he’s being genuine with the look of the design. Iteration takes time but running it past your audience multiple times isn’t a great idea so I hope they’ve got is as good as it can be.

I Really Hope The movie redesign is kinda like the game designs. But either way it looks like it’ll be a really good movie

Just a bunch of PR speak he was pleased with the original design otherwise that trailer never would have happened, the redesign will be will be awful too just like the movie and they’re using this PR speak to make fans think they “won” so they’ll accept anything they did no matter how minor then they’ll use all their buddies in the press to call anyone who still hates it as “unpleasable” if that doesn’t work they’ll go all in with that cringy ironic bs like “OMG IT WILL WIN A OSCAR!!11”.

I think this impending mess will be a huge bounty as it’s symbolic and highly resonate with everything wrong with this franchise, since the events of 2017 seems to have flown over people’s heads I think this will produce a bigger deconstruction of this breed of Sonic. I think certain fans are hoping this doesn’t happen as it’s their worst nightmare to have this exposed but it will impossible to ignore the more we see of this film.

I can write for a long time, I can be cynical, I can be critical, I could say a number of things as to why I take issue with a lot of things you say… But I won’t. There’s nothing wrong with being realistic but honestly I just want to know why you have no hope or optimism when it comes to this franchise.

Sadly, I agree with this. Quality control has gone down over the years and both the SEGA of America and Japan don’t know what they want for Sonic. Fixing character models won’t fix a terrible rehash plot script of Smurfs x Alvin and the Chipmunks. It’s the same beat as Sonic X but just Sonic and Chris only.

I was hoping they could increase the budget of the games and hire more talented programmers, but this is what the Mania/Generations money got us. Nobody asked for a live-action movie. Just a great 3D game.
