Sonic may be fighting off more than just Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming Sonic movie, if a public record is to be believed.
That record is a listing for the Sonic movie in the U.S. Copyright Office, brought to our attention by a tip on Twitter. TSSZ has independently verified the listing is active and accessible to anymore via a database search for Sonic the Hedgehog on the office’s website.
Both Paramount Pictures and Sega of America are listed as authors on the application, described as “preregistration.” The record shows creation began in July 2018, and is expected to be completed this month, with a release in February – in line with the movie’s recently re-minted release date.
The detail of the work not only describes Sonic as a “super-speedy blue alien,” it also alleges the hedgehog will be battling a “lizard warrior” in the film:
Sonic the Hedgehog, a super-speedy blue alien, teams up with a small-town cop to battle the forces of evil, including a mad scientist who hopes to take over the world ? and a lizard warrior who wants to steal Sonic?s power and use it to conquer the universe. Starring Jim Carrey, James Marsden and Ben Schwartz, and being directed by Jeff Fowler.
That lizard has not yet been seen in any trailer or otherwise mentioned. Such a detail would not be completely out of character for Sonic or the Sonic universe, as many recent games have featured Sonic battling a larger foe beyond the scope of Eggman’s traps.
We are checking with sources to verify the accuracy of the information presented by the Copyright Office and we’ll update here if warranted.
